At de Volksbank - the Dutch banking organisation behind ASN Bank, BLG Wonen, RegioBank and SNS Bank - they focus on more than just expert money management. Equally important are social initiatives to help the ‘ordinary’ Dutchman with financial topics. For example, the bank offers financial education aimed at parents with children and runs campaigns on various social issues. To better serve customers and non-customers with content, the bank was looking for an appealing online environment separate from the existing website.

The brief for this website

'The corporate website of de Volksbank didn’t meet our social objectives. It was almost entirely focused on business audiences—from content to look and feel,' reflects Vincent Troupin on his early days as interim proposition marketer at de Volksbank. 'My philosophy is that you can only engage customers in an inspiring environment. In line with this, we quickly decided that for the 'Volkskreten' campaign and customer content in general, a completely new platform was needed, which we called 'Beter voor elkaar' (Better for each other).'

Vincent lists the main requirements:

  • An environment for inspiring, ‘snackable’ content and click-through links for in-depth insights
  • A user-friendly search function with topic-based filters
  • Mobile-first design to ensure optimal responsiveness
  • A fresh look and feel, matchting the existing ‘social’ corporate identity
